In May 2021, Gino Alache spoke with JB Brubaker, guitarist of August Burns Red, as part of the Rockum Radio Show, discussing the band’s EP “Guardians Sessions” and their ongoing evolution within metalcore.

Released in 2021, “Guardians Sessions” presents an alternative perspective on the band’s sound, featuring reinterpretations, covers, and acoustic arrangements that expand the musical identity established in their previous studio album “Guardians” (2020).

During the conversation, Brubaker reflected on the creative process behind the EP, describing it as an opportunity to explore different approaches while maintaining the core elements that define the band’s sound.

The EP includes a diverse selection of material, ranging from reworked versions of existing songs to covers such as “Chop Suey!” by System Of A Down, where the band explores melodic and vocal dynamics beyond their traditional style.

Another key moment discussed in the interview is the acoustic version of “Paramount”, offering a more stripped-down interpretation that highlights the band’s compositional depth and versatility.

The conversation also touches on the band’s connection with seasonal releases, including their Christmas-themed material, which has become a recurring element within their catalog, reflecting a different side of their musical identity.

Beyond the EP, Brubaker addressed the impact of the global pandemic following the release of “Guardians”, which debuted at No. 1 on multiple Billboard charts. Despite the sudden halt of touring activity, the band continued to develop new material and maintain their creative momentum.

The interview also explores the origins of August Burns Red, the meaning behind the band’s name, and the roles of its members, including Jake Luhrs, Brent Rambler, Matt Greiner, and Dustin Davidson, providing a broader perspective on the band’s identity and structure.
