Music Journalist & Editor of Rockum

Rockum - Hey guys…First allow me to congratulate you for this new project named Adrift. How did Adrift formed and born?

In 2001, Analia and Kevin began a project with Rob Barrett (CC, Malevolent Creation). This project never went anywhere, but Kevin and Analia kept in touch. One day Analia called Kevin and told him that she had another friend she had been writing music with. This turned out to be Jack Owen from CC, and after one jam, Analia, Jack and Kevin knew they had something special. They began writing music together and Mark Elm stepped as a singer….Adrift was born. Michael Capuano was added as bass player in the summer of 2002.

Rockum - Which is the musical style of Adrift?

K.Astl_: Adrfit, really in our opinion, transcends most musical styles. We are not just rock, we are not just metal, we are Adrift. We each bring our individual influences into the fold and create something new, fresh, original…we constantly hear from our fans that we do not sound like any other bands in the current mainstream.

Rockum - For the composition of music and lyrics, in what Adrift is based on?

J.Owens_: We have many different influences. When we write, it could be as heavy as Black Sabbath or as mellow as Alice in Chains… Lyrically, we use personal experiences in our own lives to tell a story in each song.

Rockum - We know the line up of the band Owen, Capuano, Astl, Pearl, Elm. To which other bands do you belong before and which are your musical influences?

A.Pearl - Jack played in death metal bands Beyond Death, and Cannibal Corpse. He is influenced mainly by Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, and the blues. Kevin was in Tampa- based Epithaph, and then in Nuclear Blast Recording Artist’s Resurrection, both of which were death metal. As far as his influences he goes from Judas Priest and Black Sabbath to W.A.S.P. and Ozzy.Michael’s influences are John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) John Enwistle (The Who) and Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue).Mark says that he never played in other band, but he is lying. His influence, Jack Owen. As far as me, I played in guitar ensembles of classical music and as a soloist, my influences, everything from Andres Segovia to Alice in Chains, and some heavy metal.

Rockum - Here in Latin America, the band we know for its trajectory is Cannibal Corpse. Jack, do you think that you re-discovered something new while playing with Adrift after all this years following the extreme road of CC?

J_:After playing for fifteen years, I’ve become an experienced player, who can play almost any style of music. I use those different styles with Adrift, to express new ideas.

Rockum - We read very good commentaries in huge websites like Blabbermouth about the reaction of Jack’s fans with his new project Adrift. Do you guys think that now we are being witnesses of a true music “globalization” comparing with the 80’ and 90’?

J_: Yes, the world has gotten a lot smaller since the Internet has grown. Now people in the middle of nowhere know about music they would never know about.

Rockum - Right now you guys have an EP with an awesome production and sound. When would we the release of the Official Album of Adrift and how many songs would have?

K_:The three songs on the website are only three of seven from the EP, which will be release very soon. As far as an album, depending on record companies, it should have at least twelve to fifteen songs.

Rockum - What about the conversations with the record companies?

K_:We are very lucky to have label interest at this point. We are working with a very talented and creative team of people who are helping push us to the next level. We got industry contacts and praise from out of the blue every day, and we are following up with it. We are not able to disclose which labels, but we are working carefully on deals which will put us in front of as many international markets as possible, especially Latin America!

Rockum - We find out that you guys would be filming a video of your track “Empty Dreams”, we hope to see it on MTV pretty soon. Where it would be filmed, who would be the producer, and when do we get to see it?

K_The video was filmed and directed by Gary Schutt, who plays bass guitar for Jeff Scott Soto (Talisman, Yngwie Malmsteen), who is an amazing guy and friend of mine. The video should be available at www.adrift.cc in mid-April.

Rockum - Talking to Kevin, he perfectly describes himself as a loyal Latin American fan and I’m sure that jack shares that feeling about our countries and its fans after his career with Cannibal. What are the expectations that you guys have with Latin America in the future?

A_: Latin America figures to be a large part of our marketing plan, mainly because it gets passed over by most record companies, which we would not do. Latin America has many true music fans, and we want them to be able to experience what the rest of the world gets to experience.

Rockum - Analia Pearl is from Cordoba, Argentina and she represents our Latin American countries. She is also beautiful and talented. What do you guys think about having a female in the band?

K_:We have a great time with Analia, and she adds a very different but versatile musical texture and influence to the band. Of course, from a marketing standpoint, having a woman, especially a good-looking one, in the band is a definite plus, but we are lucky to have a great musician as Analia in the band. The Latin American tie is great as well, because it helps us open up to a huge market that is South America.

Rockum - When are you planning to go on your first promotional tour?

The touring is in the works right now, we are working with a booking agent. If we have to guess, we are probably looking at July or August.

Rockum -Are you guys planning to come to Latin America?

Of course, absolutely.

Rockum - Do you want to say hell to Rockum and its readers?
