Eyes of Ligeia Interview: A Fever Which Would Cling to Thee Forever and the Art of Darkness

With the release of A Fever Which Would Cling to Thee Forever, American dark metal project Eyes of Ligeia continued exploring a unique blend of black metal, doom and atmospheric darkness inspired by literature, philosophy and occult symbolism. Originally conceived as a solo project in 1998, the band had recently evolved into a full lineup while preserving the artistic vision that defined its earliest recordings.

In this exclusive interview, Rockum's Gino Alache speaks with Eyes of Ligeia about the band's origins, the concepts behind A Fever Which Would Cling to Thee Forever, its musical and philosophical influences, the Latin American black metal scene and the path the band envisioned for the future.

Gino Alache: How did Eyes of Ligeia come together?

Eyes of Ligeia: Eyes of Ligeia was formed in 1998 as a way to channel the essential sadness of existence. It began as a solo project before expanding into a full band in 2005, allowing us to perform live and collaborate with other musicians while preserving the original vision.

Gino Alache: What inspires the band's music and lyrics?

Eyes of Ligeia: Our work is rooted in Lovecraftian metaphysics, Starry Wisdom and Setian gnosis. Music and lyrics are inseparable. Together they create the complete experience and communicate the ideas that define Eyes of Ligeia.

Gino Alache: What makes A Fever Which Would Cling to Thee Forever different from your previous releases?

Eyes of Ligeia: The evolution toward darker realms continues. We also invited other worthy musicians to help create the fullest artistic vision possible. Everything released before What the Moon Brings is now considered demo material and is permanently out of print. Some of the stronger material from those early years will continue to be reworked for future releases.

Gino Alache: Which artists have influenced Eyes of Ligeia the most?

Eyes of Ligeia: The influences are fairly obvious, but we always attempt to transform them into something that transcends their origins. Some of the most important inspirations include Burzum, Thergothon, Univers Zero, Lycia and Disembowelment.

Gino Alache: What do you know about the Latin American black metal scene?

Eyes of Ligeia: We are especially familiar with Sarcófago, as well as doom bands such as Mythological Cold Towers. We respect the Latin American scene because it has largely avoided sacrificing its artistic identity for commercial success, something that has unfortunately happened in many other parts of the world.

Gino Alache: What are your thoughts on Satanism?

Eyes of Ligeia: Satanism represents the beginning of freedom, but it is not the destination itself. Rejecting conformity is only the first step. The real challenge is deciding what to do with that freedom once it has been achieved. Satan remains a powerful symbol because it is universally recognized, but that same familiarity eventually limits its meaning. Those with a truly Satanic spirit ultimately continue searching beyond the symbol itself.

Gino Alache: Are there any plans to perform in Latin America?

Eyes of Ligeia: Not at the moment. For that to happen, we would need a trustworthy promoter capable of organizing a compelling tour. Europe is currently a more realistic destination because the band already has stronger recognition there.

Gino Alache: Would you like to leave a message for Rockum readers?

Eyes of Ligeia: Always shun the light. The darkness is where the Self is most free.
