Hi David! Tell me, Is Psycroptic working in a new studio album?
Yeah, we’re working on material at the moment, so we can record maybe late 2004,
or 2005 – we’ll see what happens. We’ve got about 3 songs written, so we’re a
long way off yet!! The songs are sounding really cool, and we’re playing one of
them live at the moment.

2. Is it hard to outstand in the metal scene down there in
Australia?
Well, we’re even more isolated than other Australian bands as we live in
Tasmania which is an island off the bottom of Australia…so we have to travel to
get to the mainland of Australia. We’re very isolated from the scene and what
happens in it. This is both a positive and negative thing for us – we don’t
have to deal with any bullshit, but we also miss out on a lot of
opportunities.

3. I know Jesus Anal Penetration from there, any other bands you
recommend?
Bands such as Alarum, Astriaal, Alchemist, The Amenta, Intense Hammer rage,
Portal, Ruins, Embodied, Omnium Gatherum are really cool. There are quite a few
bands out here that are really cool. You should check them all out…

4. Tell us shortly how the band started.
We started in 1999, after the bands we were playing in split up…we were all
friends so we started to jam and things worked out well. The lineup has
remained the same since we formed back in 99. We recorded our debut album in
2000, which was released in 2001…after this we toured and wrote more songs for
our follow up “The scepter of the ancients” which was released by Unique Leader
Records in 2003.

5. How do you meet the members of the band?
Some of us went to school with each other, and some of us just got to know each
other from gigs. Since myself and Joe (guitars) are brothers, we tend to know
and hang out with the same people. We are all really good friends and hang out
all the time…

6. Seeing the main influences of all members, I see most of them
match in Dying Fetus. How strong do you think is their influence in the
actual Psycroptic?
We all listen to lots of different music, and no one band has influenced us more
than another I would say. We listen to everything from extreme death and black
metal, to power metal and traditional metal. If its good, we’ll listen to it.
We’re not people who say “I’ll only listen to black metal” or whatever. Good
music is good music – simple as that!! We try to keep our minds open to
anything that comes along.

7. When do you started playing drums?
I got my first drum kit when I was 13, and I just turned 24 last week (march
2004)…so I’ve been playing for about 11 years. I didn’t start to get really
serious until I was about 15 or 16 – that’s when I started getting lessons and
practicing. I’m still practicing and learning the drums…there is just so much
to explore on them

8. Which was the first record you bought?
Metallica’s “Ride the lightning”…I got it on tape when I was 8…its is killer!! I
remember my mum took it off me to read the lyrics to make sure nothing was bad
on it before I got a chance to listen to it. I got it back and wore the tape
out pretty much. So its been metal ever since…and I still love it.

9. What do you hate?
I don’t hate many things, but I can’t deal with discrimination – based on
anything, where it be race, age, sex, preferences, etc. Its fucken bullshit.
People should just live their lives and not fuck with others. You know,
everyone can do what ever they want so long as it doesn’t hurt others…that’s
what I think.

10. Which bands would you like to play with?
Heaps…to many to list….but we will be playing with deeds of flesh this year in
Australia which will be fucken killer!! We will also be going to Europe later
in the year, so hopefully we’ll play with some other sick bands…

11. Do you know anything about Peru?
Not much, no…I would like to visit there one day – hopefully this will happen. I
know Peru is next door to Brazil. is on the coastline of South America, and
that it has some beautiful scenery, but this is about all. What do you know
about Tasmania (haha)? You should check out some websites about Tasmania!!

12. What is your favorite show at the date?
The best show I’ve seen is Opeth live…but hopefully once I’ve seen Deeds of
Flesh, that will be my favorite show…I’m really looking forward to it!!

13. Do you think “Scepter of the ancients” is better (musically)
that “The Isle of Disenchantment”?
Yes, defiantly…I think it is a step up in all areas – musically, production
wise, playing…everything. I think it also has more of our own sound…more
original the “The isle…”. Next time we record, we plan to make it much better
than “Scepter…” – raise the bar another level so to speak.

14. Any plans to tour South America?
Unfortunately not at this stage, no. For the near future, we want to get over to
Europe, then hopefully the US after that. Coming from Australia costs a lot of
money and we jjust cannot afford it at this stage. Hopefully in the future.

15. Finally, what is your opinion about Rockum and what would you
say to the rockum readers?

Well, this is the first contact I’ve had with Rockum, and it has been very
plesent! To the Rockum readers I would say keep supporting metal, and if you’ve
not heard Psycroptic yet, please check us out at www.psycroptic.com . Thanks for
the interview, and stay metal!!
