The guitarist and drummer were the heart of the iconic band. Following Eddie’s passing from cancer in 2020, Alex remained silent—until now, as he shares his story in a new book.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Alex Van Halen discussed his decision to release his much-anticipated memoir, Brothers, which is set to hit shelves on October 22 via HarperCollins. The book, described as an intimate and unflinching account—unlike any other rock and roll memoir—dives deep into the story of family, friendship, music, and brotherly love between Alex and his late brother, the legendary VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen.

When asked why he chose to write the book, Alex said, "I wanted to bring more depth to the understanding of who Ed really was. When you're in the spotlight, people often speak for you. I wanted to remind everyone that Ed wasn't a commodity. He was a complex human being."

On how he approached writing the memoir, Alex shared, "If you're going to tell the story, you need to give equal weight to both the good and the bad. Because the good doesn't make sense without the bad."

With a grin, he added, "I know that sounds like philosophical mumbo jumbo, but I really wanted to highlight that Ed was brave right until the very end. At the end of the day, he has nothing to be ashamed of. I just wish he were here so I could say, ‘Ed, let’s give it one more shot,’ because I know he still had it in him."

The 240-page Brothers memoir will be available in three formats: standard hardcover, a deluxe signed edition, and an audiobook narrated by Alex himself. The audiobook will feature an unreleased track titled Unfinished, the last song Eddie and Alex wrote together.

"This is my tribute to my brother; my way of saying goodbye," Alex said. "Ed, I love you and I miss you. And when I see you again, I’m gonna kick your ass!"

As previously announced, Alex will be hosting two book-signing events in October. The legendary VAN HALEN drummer will also participate in a live conversation event in Los Angeles this month.

Book-signing events:

Monday, Oct. 21 @ 12 p.m. - Barnes & Noble, New York City
Tuesday, Oct. 22 @ 6 p.m. - Books & Greetings, Northvale, NJ
Live conversation event in Los Angeles:

Thursday, Oct. 24 @ 8 p.m. - Live Talks LA @ the Frost Auditorium, Culver City
