Formed in Ottawa in the mid-2000s, Encephalon—comprising Matt Gifford (vocals,
programming) and Sam Mainer (keyboards, live drums), has become a defining force in the global industrial music scene. Their genre-blurring sound fuses elements of dark electro, synthpop, and cyberpunk aesthetics, earning them a devoted following. Since their breakthrough debut, The Transhuman Condition (2011), and subsequent critically acclaimed albums Psychogenesis (2015) and Echoes (2021), Encephalon has consistently pushed the boundaries of electronic music, exploring themes of technology, identity, and existential dread.
Automaton All Along is their boldest statement yet; a dystopian concept album that challenges listeners both sonically and intellectually. The record explores the blurred lines between man and machine, diving into the psychological and philosophical implications of a world where AI and consciousness become indistinguishable. Encephalon masterfully crafts a soundscape that is both eerily futuristic and deeply human, creating an experience that resonates long after the last track fades.
With Automaton All Along, Encephalon reaffirms their position at the cutting edge of electroni music. The album’s intricate production, layered sound design, and thought-provoking lyrics make it a must-listen for fans of Front Line Assembly, Nitzer Ebb, The Prodigy, and anyone drawn to the darker, more cerebral side of electronic music.

ABOUT ENCEPHALON
Encephalon was formed in 2005 in Ottawa, Canada by Alis Keller, Matt Gifford, and Sam Mainer and self-released a number of demos before getting the attention of labels, most notably the German label Dependent (who put out the band’s first commercially available track), and Artoffact Records, who released the band’s debut, The Transhuman Condition. That recordwent on to receive album of the year nods on music blog I Die: You Die, who noted that Encephalon are “squarely ahead of most of their peers.”
Over the years, Encephalon has continued to evolve, releasing critically acclaimed albums such as Psychogenesis (2015) and Echoes (2021), each delving deeper into themes of identity, technology, and existential dread. Their work often blurs the line between industrial aggression and hauntingly beautiful electronic melodies, creating a sonic experience that resonates with fans of diverse electronic subgenres. Encephalon’s commitment to innovation, paired with their electrifying live performances, has cemented their status as one of Canada’s most compelling contributions to the industrial music scene.
