While on August 16, 2006, the United States Coast Guard arrested Javier Arellano F閘ix, leader of the powerful Tijuana cartel, and the International Astronomical Union debated a new definition of "planet" that would change Pluto's status, the extreme metal world lost one of its most enigmatic figures: Jon N鰀tveidt.

That same day, 2006, Jon N鰀tveidt, vocalist and guitarist of the influential black metal band Dissection, died at the age of 31 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death marked the end of an intense and multifaceted life within extreme metal, a genre where he left an indelible mark through his music, convictions, and controversial lifestyle. Beyond his tragic departure, his legacy remains strong, solidifying him as one of the most enigmatic and polarizing figures in black metal.

Jon N鰀tveidt

The Beginnings and Rise of Dissection
Dissection was formed in 1989 in Str鰉stad, Sweden, and from the early days, Jon N鰀tveidt demonstrated a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve with the band. Their demo The Grief Prophecy (1990), followed by the EP Into Infinite Obscurity (1991), caught the attention of the underground scene, establishing Dissection as a promising force in melodic black metal.

In 1993, the band released their debut studio album, The Somberlain, a work that combined the aggression of death metal with the dark and melodic atmosphere of black metal. Dedicated to Euronymous (guitarist of Mayhem and a key figure in the Norwegian Inner Circle), this album became a milestone within the genre, positioning Dissection as one of the most innovative bands in extreme metal.

Two years later, in 1995, they released Storm of the Light's Bane, considered their masterpiece. With tracks like "Night's Blood" and "Where Dead Angels Lie," this album defined Dissection's sound and became a cornerstone of melodic black metal. It was their definitive consecration but also marked the beginning of Jon's personal troubles that would lead to the band's forced hiatus.

Crime and Imprisonment
In 1997, N鰀tveidt was arrested and convicted for his involvement in the murder of Josef Ben Meddour, an Algerian immigrant in Sweden. The crime, linked to the occultist group Misanthropic Luciferian Order (MLO), resulted in a 10-year prison sentence, of which he served seven. During his time in prison, he delved deeper into occultism and the MLO ideology, which directly influenced his music and worldview.

The Comeback and "Reinkaos"
After his release in 2004, Jon revived Dissection with a new lineup and a renewed focus. In 2006, they released Reinkaos, an album that marked a shift in their sound, moving away from melodic black metal and embracing a more structured melodic death metal approach with strong philosophical undertones. The album's lyrics were entirely influenced by MLO teachings, presenting themselves as a kind of "ritual music" meant to represent Luciferian enlightenment.

Despite his return, N鰀tveidt announced Dissection's dissolution shortly after the release of Reinkaos, stating that the band had fulfilled its purpose.

Suicide and Jon N鰀tveidt's Legacy
On August 16, 2006, Jon was found dead in his Stockholm apartment. He had shot himself in the head, surrounded by candles and with a Satanic grimoire near his body. In a previous interview, he had declared that a Satanist chooses their own death as an act of will.

His passing marked the definitive end of Dissection, but his influence on extreme metal remains strong. Black and death metal bands continue to cite his work as a source of inspiration, and Storm of the Light's Bane is still considered one of the best albums in the genre.
