Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary lead singer of Black Sabbath and one of the most influential figures in the history of heavy metal, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 76.
Known to fans around the world as the "Prince of Darkness," Osbourne was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003, though he didn’t speak publicly about it until 2020. In a statement to the BBC, his family said:
"It is with more sadness than words can express that we confirm our beloved Ozzy Osbourne passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask for privacy as we mourn this tremendous loss."
Osbourne’s final performance with Black Sabbath took place in Birmingham, England—his hometown—bringing a powerful close to a monumental career that helped define a genre.
Earlier this year, during the January 29 episode of his SiriusXM show "Ozzy Speaks," the singer candidly shared that he could no longer walk.
"I may be moaning about how I can’t walk," he said, "but I look down the road and there’s people that didn’t do half as much as me, and they didn’t make it."
