In the summer of 2005, Ozzfest was supposed to be a celebration of heavy metal at its finest, co-headlined by two giants: Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. But what should have been a triumphant tour became one of the most infamous controversies in rock history.

The Build-Up to Chaos
Iron Maiden, led by the charismatic Bruce Dickinson, delivered fiery performances night after night. But behind the scenes, tensions simmered. According to Sharon Osbourne, Dickinson repeatedly mocked Ozzy Osbourne on stage, calling into question his role in the festival and the credibility of Black Sabbath. Sharon, who managed Ozzy and co-produced Ozzfest, felt these jabs were unforgivable—especially since Iron Maiden was being paid $185,000 per show and had been given everything they demanded.

The infamous incident took place on August 20, 2005, during the final night of Ozzfest at the Glen Helen Pavilion in San Bernardino, California.

Sharon later told Howard Stern:
“They were getting everything they wanted. And Bruce would go on stage every night slagging Ozzy. Ozzy is the schmuck paying him! On the last night in L.A., I got 200 kids, loaded them with eggs, peanut butter, and ice, and told them to pelt the shit out of them.”

Eggstorm in Los Angeles
On the final night at the Glen Helen Pavilion in San Bernardino, chaos erupted. As Iron Maiden launched into their set, they were ambushed by a barrage of eggs, bottle caps, and debris thrown from the crowd. The sabotage didn’t stop there. Reports surfaced that the band’s sound was intentionally cut several times, with feedback and power issues plaguing their performance.

And yet, Iron Maiden refused to back down. Bruce Dickinson and his bandmates powered through, delivering their songs with even greater intensity. The crowd, caught between admiration and disbelief, witnessed a band literally fighting through sabotage to finish their show.

Bruce, Sharon, and the Fallout
Bruce Dickinson responded defiantly, dismissing the feud as a “storm in a teacup.” For him, the band’s resilience was proof that Maiden would never be silenced. Iron Maiden’s manager, Rod Smallwood, took a harsher stance, calling Sharon’s behavior “disgusting and unprofessional,” noting he had never seen anything like it in 30 years of the business.

Sharon Osbourne, however, defended her actions. After the egg attack, she stormed on stage, mocking Dickinson and warning others not to “disrespect the Osbournes.” Instead of applause, she was met with boos and jeers, as many fans sided with Iron Maiden. Some even walked out before Black Sabbath’s set in protest.

Steve Harris, Iron Maiden’s bassist, attempted to mend fences, apologizing directly to Ozzy backstage:
“I’d like to apologize for our singer.”

Ozzy himself later told The Quietus that he had no idea Dickinson had been insulting him, saying:
“If you’ve got something to say, be a man and say it to my face. Don’t slag me off every night on stage. That’s pathetically childish.”

Sharon vs. Bruce
Sharon Osbourne made it clear that her issue was with Dickinson, not with Maiden as a whole. Speaking later, she admitted she “respected the rest of the band” but thought Bruce had “a chip on his shoulder.” Still, she never apologized for orchestrating the eggstorm.

Bruce, for his part, kept his cool. Years later, in a 2017 interview with NME, he put the controversy to rest:
“It’s a complete storm in a teacup. I grew up listening to Sabbath with Ozzy. Ozzy and Sabbath are icons. End of story.”

Legacy of the Feud
The Ozzfest egg incident remains one of the most notorious clashes in metal history. For some, it exposed the darker side of rock politics, where egos and grudges spilled over into sabotage. For others, it cemented Iron Maiden’s reputation as uncompromising warriors of heavy metal who, even under attack, refused to bow.

Looking back, it stands as a bizarre but unforgettable moment—a night when one of the greatest live bands in history was pelted with eggs, yet emerged even stronger in the eyes of their fans.
