Canada’s heavy metal underground continues to evolve, and among the bands carrying the torch with passion and ambition is Thunderor, a trio determined to keep the spirit of classic heavy metal alive while forging their own identity.

Emerging from the Canadian metal scene with strong ties to traditional heavy metal and melodic power, Thunderor have steadily carved their identity through a sound that blends classic influences with a modern, narrative-driven approach. Their upcoming rock-opera inspired album Bleed For It represents their most ambitious step yet, presenting a conceptual journey that leans into storytelling, melody and grand, cinematic arrangements.

The album serves as the official soundtrack to Thunderor The Musical, the band’s ambitious stage production that debuted in Toronto in 2025, further expanding their storytelling beyond the traditional studio format.

Formed in 2020 by multi-JUNO-nominated musicians JJ Tartaglia and Jonny Nesta, both known for their work with Canadian heavy metal force Skull Fist, Thunderor quickly established themselves within the country’s traditional metal circuit. Their debut album Fire It Up (2022) reached #1 on Earshot’s National Loud Chart and helped propel the band onto international stages across Europe, Canada, Mexico, and South America alongside acts such as Airbourne, U.D.O., Enforcer and Night Demon.

At the center of the band’s creative direction is JJ Tartaglia, a musician deeply connected to Canada’s traditional metal scene. Through Thunderor, he channels a clear love for the larger-than-life spirit of ’80s heavy metal, the kind built on anthemic hooks and soaring vocals while giving it a contemporary edge shaped by today’s independent metal landscape.

The band’s latest single and video, “One Chance,” offers a glimpse into the rock-opera narrative of Bleed For It, blending melodic drive with the kind of storyline ambition that pushes Thunderor beyond a standard collection of tracks.

Thunderor are not newcomers to Rockum’s radar. Their 2022 release Fire It Up is part of my own collection, a record where tracks like “Fire It Up,” “How We Roll,” and “Dangerous Times” deliver a powerful blend of classic heavy metal influences. Drawing clear inspiration from the spirit of Saxon, Judas Priest, Manowar and the modern Canadian force Skull Fist, the album stands as a potent statement that invites repeated listening and confirms the band’s commitment to classic-driven heavy metal with a fresh, energetic delivery.

Having followed their growth and connected with the band directly, it’s clear Thunderor approach their craft with genuine dedication and a strong DIY spirit, essential qualities in today’s independent metal scene. As a Canadian metal act continuing to push forward with ambition and identity, they represent the kind of band worth supporting and watching closely as they evolve.

I still hope to catch Thunderor live here in Kingston at some point, as local touring opportunities can sometimes fly under the radar despite the band’s growing momentum across Canada and abroad. Seeing their high-energy, story-driven approach translate to the stage would undoubtedly be an experience for any fan of classic heavy metal.

With Bleed For It, Thunderor aim to push further into their rock-opera vision, reinforcing that the classic spirit of traditional heavy metal still has a future in the hands of passionate torchbearers.
