The Swedish gothic doom metal band prepares to release the album “In Somnolent Ruin” on May 8, marking the long-awaited return of vocalist Lisa Johansson.
Few bands within the gothic doom metal landscape have cultivated a sound as immersive and emotionally resonant as Draconian. Emerging from Sweden in the mid-1990s, the group gradually built a reputation for blending slow, atmospheric doom metal with poetic lyricism and dramatic vocal interplay.
Since the release of their debut album Where Lovers Mourn in 2003, Draconian have developed a distinctive identity within the genre. Their music combines melancholic melodies, heavy instrumentation and deeply introspective themes, often exploring feelings of isolation, loss and existential reflection.
Over the years, albums such as Arcane Rain Fell, Turning Season Within, A Rose for the Apocalypse and Sovran helped establish the band as one of the defining names of modern gothic doom metal. Their 2020 release Under a Godless Veil further strengthened that reputation, reaching a wide audience among fans of atmospheric and melancholic metal.
Now Draconian prepare to unveil a new chapter with the album “In Somnolent Ruin”, scheduled for release on May 8. The upcoming record also marks an important moment in the band’s history with the return of vocalist Lisa Johansson, whose voice shaped the group’s early albums before her departure in 2011.
Johansson’s return reunites her with long-time vocalist Anders Jacobsson, restoring the vocal dynamic that defined the band’s earliest recordings. The combination of Johansson’s ethereal delivery and Jacobsson’s darker vocal presence has long been one of the most recognizable elements of the band’s sound.
The first glimpse into the new album arrives through the single “Cold Heavens”, the first track unveiled from “In Somnolent Ruin” and accompanied by an animated video introducing listeners to the atmosphere surrounding the upcoming record.
According to guitarist Johan Ericson, the song was written late in the album’s creative process and was intended to bring a different dynamic to the record. As he explained, the band wanted to include a more direct and relatively up-tempo piece to contrast with some of the album’s longer compositions.
Ericson noted that Lisa Johansson’s restrained vocal performance leads the song through a bleak and desolate atmosphere before gradually giving way to the harsher and more desperate delivery of Anders Jacobsson. The track ultimately closes with a sense of resignation, naturally leading into the following piece in the album’s sequence.
The album arrives after several changes within the band’s lineup over the past few years. Guitarist Niklas Nord joined the group in 2022, while drummer Daniel Johansson became a full member after previously performing with the band in a session capacity. Long-time member Daniel Arvidsson, who originally played guitar, now contributes on bass.
Across its nine tracks, “In Somnolent Ruin” continues the band’s exploration of dark introspection and poetic imagery. Titles such as “The Monochrome Blade,” “I Gave You Wings,” and “Misanthrope River” suggest a thematic journey through emotional struggle, existential uncertainty and the search for meaning within darkness.
More than two decades after their formation, Draconian remain one of the most distinctive voices within gothic doom metal. With the return of Lisa Johansson and the arrival of “In Somnolent Ruin”, the band once again invites listeners into a world where melancholy, heaviness and introspective lyricism converge.
For fans of atmospheric doom metal, the upcoming release represents not only the continuation of the band’s legacy, but also the reunion of voices that helped shape the sound of Draconian from the very beginning.
