The Swedish metal band revisit naval warfare history with a new song dedicated to the legendary battleship Yamato.
Swedish heavy metal powerhouse Sabaton return with a new single and music video titled “Yamato”, a song that once again dives into the dramatic world of military history that has long defined the band’s songwriting.
The track arrives following the release of the band’s 2025 album “Legends”, their first studio record issued through Better Noise Music. One of the album’s standout moments, “Crossing the Rubicon” featuring Nothing More, became the band’s first Top 10 entry on the Billboard Rock Chart, marking another milestone in the group’s already impressive career.
With “Yamato”, Sabaton revisit naval warfare history through the story of the legendary Japanese battleship of the same name. Built in secrecy and unveiled in 1941, the Yamato was the largest and most heavily armed battleship of its era, designed to dominate the seas during World War II. In 1945, the ship embarked on its final mission during the Battle of Okinawa, ultimately sinking after a relentless assault from American aircraft.
For Sabaton, whose catalog is filled with songs inspired by real historical events, the story of the Yamato represents another powerful narrative drawn from the dramatic moments of the past.
The song also marks the band’s second collaboration with the naval combat game World of Warships, following their highly successful 2019 single “Bismarck.” That track became one of the most popular songs in Sabaton’s catalog, accumulating more than 116 million streams on Spotify and over 100 million views for its music video.
The new video for “Yamato” was filmed in Belgrade, Serbia, and visually recreates the final moments of the battleship’s legendary last stand. In the clip, the members of Sabaton perform aboard the ship as it sinks beneath violent waves, continuing to play their instruments as the chaos unfolds around them.
The filming process proved physically demanding for the band. During the shoot, the musicians performed while exposed to freezing water and harsh conditions designed to recreate the sensation of the ship going down at sea. Divers and safety teams assisted throughout the production as the band remained partially submerged while performing their parts.
According to vocalist Joakim Brodén, naval warfare has always been a compelling theme for the band. He described the new track as a natural continuation of the story first explored in “Bismarck,” noting that the idea for the song originally came from former guitarist Tommy Johansson before later being finalized with current guitarist Thobbe Englund.
Bassist Pär Sundström added that fans had long requested a song about the Yamato, making it a fitting follow-up to one of the band’s most beloved historical tracks.
Over the past two decades, Sabaton have built a global reputation for transforming real historical battles into powerful heavy metal anthems. Since their debut in the mid-2000s, the band has released numerous internationally successful albums, headlined major festivals and developed a devoted worldwide fanbase drawn to their unique blend of history and heavy metal.
With “Yamato”, the band once again proves that the stories of the past can still resonate through modern metal, especially when they are delivered with the thunder of guitars and the scale of epic storytelling that has become synonymous with Sabaton.
With “Yamato,” Sabaton once again prove that history and heavy metal share the same battlefield, where legends are forged in fire, steel and unforgettable stories
