The Dutch folk metal band introduce a cinematic new chapter with “De Overtocht”, previewing their upcoming concept album Roede voor de Borst and expanding their presence within the European metal scene
Dutch folk metal band Vanaheim unveil their new single and official video “De Overtocht”, offering a first glimpse into their upcoming concept album Roede voor de Borst, set for release in September 2026 via Fireflash Records.
Translating to “The Crossing”, the track explores a deeply introspective journey through loss, fear and transformation, following a character caught between life and death in a symbolic purgatory. Through its narrative, “De Overtocht” evolves from despair into clarity, ultimately delivering a powerful message about confronting isolation and rediscovering the will to live.
The band describe the song as a defining moment in the creative process behind the album:
“‘De Overtocht’ was the spark that shaped the direction of the entire record. It captures the emotional core of the story and set the tone for everything that followed.”
Musically, the track blends symphonic heaviness, folk-inspired melodies and death metal elements, reflecting the band’s signature approach to modern folk metal while maintaining a strong narrative identity rooted in European storytelling traditions.
Formed in Tilburg, Netherlands, Vanaheim have steadily built a reputation within the European metal scene since their formation in 2015. Early releases such as the EP The House Spirit (2017) and the album Een Verloren Verhaal (2022) positioned the band as one of the emerging forces within the genre, with the latter receiving widespread recognition and being highlighted among the standout releases of its year.
Between 2023 and 2025, Vanaheim expanded their reach through performances at major festivals including Wacken Open Air, Graspop Metal Meeting and Wave Gotik Treffen, while sharing stages with acts such as Ensiferum, Heidevolk and Alestorm. This period solidified their presence as one of the bands leading a renewed interest in epic and story-driven folk metal.
With Roede voor de Borst, Vanaheim take a significant step forward, presenting a concept album set within a Dutch 19th century-inspired narrative world. The record explores themes of regret, despair, hope and redemption, weaving them into a cohesive musical storyline.
The album also features contributions from notable musicians including Coen Janssen of Epica and Nils Fischer of Eluveitie, further expanding the band’s sonic scope. Production was handled by Joost van den Broek, with mastering by Mika Jussila, adding a high level of refinement to the overall sound.
By combining Dutch-language lyrics with cinematic composition and a balance between melody and heaviness, the album reinforces Vanaheim’s identity while pushing their sound into a more expansive and immersive direction.
