Placebo mark three decades since their debut with the announcement of Placebo RE:CREATED, a reimagined version of the album that introduced them to the world in 1996.

Set for release on June 19, 2026 via Elevator Lady Ltd through AWAL, the album revisits the original recordings from a new perspective, combining the essence of the past with the band’s evolution across thirty years.

When Placebo first emerged in the mid-1990s, they stood apart from the dominant Britpop movement. Rather than embracing nostalgia or national identity, the band presented a more confrontational and introspective approach, addressing themes such as sexuality, androgyny, addiction and alienation with a level of honesty rarely seen in mainstream rock at the time.

With Placebo RE:CREATED, the band return to that defining moment, reworking all ten tracks from the original album alongside two bonus tracks. Songs such as “Nancy Boy” and “36 Degrees” are revisited with arrangements shaped by decades of live performance, allowing the material to evolve while maintaining its original spirit.

The band describe the project as a “director’s cut,” explaining that the goal was not to reinvent the album, but to complete it:

“We went back to the original master tapes and brought 30 years of playing these songs live back into the record… It’s not about improving it, it’s about completing it.”

The new recordings were developed from the original masters by Brian Molko and Rob Kirwan, with mixing handled by Adam Noble, resulting in a sound that preserves the immediacy of the original while expanding its sonic depth.

Beyond its musical impact, the original debut album also carried cultural significance. At a time when discussions around identity and gender expression were largely absent from mainstream rock, Placebo challenged conventions with a visual and lyrical identity that resonated with audiences outside traditional norms.

Thirty years later, those themes remain relevant, giving Placebo RE:CREATED a renewed context that connects the band’s origins with contemporary conversations around identity and individuality.

The anniversary release will be available across multiple formats, including CD, cassette, box set and several vinyl editions, including a picture disc version.
