The Norwegian symphonic black metal band return with a new album via Nuclear Blast, introducing “Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel” and announcing a co-headline tour with Behemoth and Dark Funeral
Norwegian symphonic black metal pioneers Dimmu Borgir return with “Grand Serpent Rising”, a new studio album that marks a continuation of their legacy within extreme music. Following the release of “Eonian” in 2018, the band re-emerge with a work that reflects both their past and their evolving sound.
Set for release on May 22, 2026 via Nuclear Blast Records, the album brings together elements from across the band’s discography, combining orchestral arrangements with the aggressive foundation of black metal.
The track “Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel”, presented alongside a cinematic video, introduces the album’s thematic direction. Performed in Norwegian, the song explores ideas of heritage, lineage, and the transmission of identity across generations, reinforcing the band’s long-standing use of cultural and symbolic elements.
Produced by Fredrik Nordström, whose previous work with the band includes “Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia” and “Death Cult Armageddon”, the album reflects a return to a collaborative approach that has defined some of the band’s most recognized releases. The production emphasizes both scale and intensity, balancing orchestral depth with a direct sonic impact.
Conceptually, “Grand Serpent Rising” draws on themes of transformation and renewal. The symbolism of the serpent is presented not only as a traditional representation of darkness, but also as a figure of change, growth, and knowledge, reflecting a broader narrative within the album.
Beyond the release, Dimmu Borgir will join Behemoth and Dark Funeral for the “In League With Satan” co-headline tour across Europe and the UK in October 2026, bringing together three of the most influential names in extreme metal.
