Inside the difficult pause that revealed the ethos of Motörhead
When Motörhead announced that their upcoming European tour would be postponed until early 2014, many fans felt the sting of waiting. But behind the decision was something deeper than logistics. It was about honor, honesty, and the fierce demand Lemmy Kilmister placed on himself every time he stepped on stage.
The iconic frontman had recently battled a series of health complications, including a hematoma, heart issues, and the installation of a defibrillator. Although he attempted a return at the Wacken Open Air Festival in the summer of 2013, the combination of extreme heat and recovery forced him to cut the performance short.
Rather than risk delivering anything less than the signature Motörhead punch, Lemmy chose caution. In a message posted to the band’s official Facebook page, he addressed the situation with his trademark bluntness:
“I am working on getting my strength back and my ability to deliver what you know me for. Personally, I have been reconfiguring my life to make sure I can return more fit and stronger than ever. When people come to see Motörhead, they expect a Motörhead show, and that is exactly what they will get as soon as I am ready for battle.”
It was a rare moment of vulnerability from a figure often framed as unbreakable, a man who built his legacy on whisky, volume, and velocity. But the decision was driven by respect: for music, for fans, and for the high voltage standard he famously refused to lower.
Lemmy also clarified he was not embracing a radical lifestyle shift, quipping that he was not about to promote veganism or abandon alcohol entirely. Still, the message was clear. Adjustments had to be made. The consequences of decades on the road had become impossible to ignore.
For fans, the postponement marked the first time many had seen Lemmy pause. For the rock community, it was a reminder that heroes age, even if their mythology does not. And for Lemmy himself, it was an opportunity to fight back on his own terms.
He closed his message with gratitude, patience, and a warning:
“I am feeling stronger every day… so watch out Europe, because we will see you soon.”
The hiatus only added weight to Motörhead’s legend. When Lemmy returned, audiences roared louder than ever.
Because in rock n’ roll, comebacks are forged with scars.
