“The Red in the Sky Is Ours,” “With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness” and “Terminal Spirit Disease” return on May 22 with new remastering by Dan Swanö
The Swedish melodic death metal pioneers At The Gates will revisit a defining chapter of their early catalog with the reissue of three landmark albums, set for release on May 22 as newly remastered CD editions.
The reissues include “The Red in the Sky Is Ours” (1992), “With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness” (1993), and “Terminal Spirit Disease” (1994), all remastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound Studios, bringing renewed clarity to recordings that helped shape the Gothenburg sound and the foundations of modern melodic death metal.
The band’s evolution continues into the present, as reflected in their recent material, including “The Dissonant Void”, offering further insight into their current direction and ongoing creative activity.
Emerging from the remnants of Grotesque, At The Gates introduced a distinct musical identity in the early 1990s, blending aggression, melody, and experimental structures that stood apart from the dominant death metal styles of the time.
Their debut, “The Red in the Sky Is Ours”, remains one of the most unconventional entries in the genre, incorporating elements such as violin arrangements alongside chaotic riffing and complex compositions, establishing a blueprint that would influence an entire generation.
The follow-up, “With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness”, recorded at Sunlight Studios with producer Tomas Skogsberg, expanded the band’s sonic scope with more melodic depth, philosophical themes, and traces of black metal influence. The album also features a guest appearance by Matti Kärki of Dismember.
By the time of “Terminal Spirit Disease”, the band had begun refining their approach, introducing a more direct and structured songwriting style that would later culminate in their breakthrough album “Slaughter of the Soul” (1995), widely regarded as a cornerstone of the genre.
At The Gates remain active across both studio releases and radio exposure, with their material featured on the Rockum Radio Show, where new and classic tracks continue to reach a global audience.
The band’s creative philosophy has also been explored in depth, including a Rockum feature based on a 2021 interview with Tomas Lindberg, where he reflected on the band’s artistic direction and long-term vision:
