The Vancouver band continue the rollout surrounding their latest album, combining heavy metal, gothic rock, and cinematic atmospheres
Spell have released the video for “Exquisite Corpse” following the arrival of their latest album “Wretched Heart”, available now through Bad Omen Records.
The album follows “Tragic Magic” (2022) and continues the band’s combination of heavy metal, gothic textures, and melodic songwriting.
Based in Vancouver, Spell have developed a sound centered on atmospheric arrangements and classic heavy metal structures while incorporating broader cinematic and rock influences.
“Exquisite Corpse” combines melodic guitar-driven arrangements with theatrical and darker tonal elements.
According to vocalist and bassist Cam Mesmer, the lyrics explore the tendency to idealize the past and reshape memories into versions disconnected from reality, particularly in the context of loss and grief.
The video for the track was created by Jamie Ward.
“Wretched Heart” continues the stylistic direction explored by the band in previous releases while expanding its use of melody, atmosphere, and dynamic arrangements.
The album examines themes tied to mortality, uncertainty, emotional conflict, and transformation, balancing direct heavy metal structures with more introspective material.
The album cycle also included the singles:
“Take My Life” — addressing themes connected to mortality and personal confrontation
“Lilac” — centered on impermanence and emotional transience
The video for “Take My Life” was directed by James Barry and Sean Edwards for Ramble Films.
“Lilac” featured a guest guitar solo by Tom Draper, known for his work with Spirit Adrift, Carcass, and Angel Witch.
According to Cam Mesmer, the band approaches heavy metal as a flexible framework rather than a fixed stylistic formula, allowing the group to incorporate different influences without separating them from their identity as a metal band.
The current lineup continues to build on that approach through a combination of layered guitars, synthesizers, and melodic structures.
