New single arrives days before the release of the band's upcoming studio album as Deep Purple continue their European tour
DEEP PURPLE have released their new single "Guilt Trippin'", offering another preview of their forthcoming studio album SPLAT!, scheduled for worldwide release on July 3 via earMUSIC.
Accompanied by an animated music video, "Guilt Trippin'" becomes the third song unveiled from the upcoming record, following the previously released "Arrogant Boy" and "Diablo". Beginning with a restrained piano introduction before expanding into one of the album's most energetic moments, "Guilt Trippin'" also features one of Ian Gillan's most expressive vocal performances on the record. According to Gillan, the vocals originated spontaneously during the recording sessions before any lyrics had been written, eventually becoming one of the song's defining characteristics.
Lyrically, the track imagines an unusual conversation between God and Charles Darwin, reflecting on humanity's unexpected evolution. The accompanying video follows a fly and a sycamore-seed spacecraft through the surreal visual world created around the upcoming album.
As the release of SPLAT! approaches, Deep Purple continue their European summer tour before launching the North American leg of the SPLAT! World Tour. The current lineup—Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Don Airey, and Simon McBride—continues the band's collaboration with longtime producer Bob Ezrin, who also produced the recent studio albums NOW What?!, inFinite, Whoosh!, Turning to Crime and =1.
Rockum has also recently explored another chapter of the band's long history in Deep Purple, Joe Lynn Turner and Ritchie Blackmore: The Elegant Power of Slaves and Masters, highlighting a different era of one of hard rock's most influential bands.
