Autopsy Announce Mental Funeral 35th Anniversary Editions Through Peaceville

Autopsy will mark the 35th anniversary of Mental Funeral with two new editions of the 1991 album, scheduled for release on August 14, 2026 through Peaceville.

The anniversary editions feature newly remastered audio by current Autopsy bassist Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios. The album will be available as a limited red/green ink spot vinyl edition and as a 2CD edition with a bonus commentary disc.

Mental Funeral was Autopsy’s second studio album, originally released in 1991. The album followed Severed Survival, the band’s 1989 debut, and remains one of the central titles in the early American death metal archive.

The album was recorded at Different Fur Studios in late 1990, with engineering by Ron Rigler. The cover artwork was created by Kev Walker, who had also provided the artwork for Severed Survival.

The 35th anniversary editions of Mental Funeral will be released in two formats:

The red/green ink spot vinyl edition focuses on the newly remastered version of Mental Funeral.

The 2CD edition adds a second disc built around commentary from Chris Reifert, Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles, making it the edition with the strongest archival component for listeners interested in the album’s creation and recording history.

Autopsy formed in 1987 in San Francisco. Drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert had previously gained recognition through his work with Death, including his participation on Scream Bloody Gore.

During the early part of their career, Autopsy released four albums through Peaceville Records, beginning with Severed Survival in 1989. The band disbanded in 1995, with members later continuing through Abscess.

Autopsy officially returned after a 15-year hiatus with the The Tomb Within EP in 2010. The band followed that return with its fifth studio album, Macabre Eternal, in 2011.

The band continues to be associated with its longstanding core of Chris Reifert, Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles. The 35th anniversary editions of Mental Funeral also connect the band’s early catalog to its current era through the remastering work of bassist Greg Wilkinson.

Through the 35th anniversary editions of Mental Funeral, Autopsy revisit one of the defining records in their early catalog with remastered audio and a collector-focused 2CD edition that adds commentary from Chris Reifert, Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles. The release also preserves key archival details around the album’s original recording at Different Fur Studios, its engineering by Ron Rigler, its artwork by Kev Walker and its continued place in the Peaceville death metal catalog.
