The Los Angeles band led by Alex Band will release their third album, Before The World Turns To Dust, this fall through TLG | Virgin Music Group
The Calling have returned with “Dust,” the first single and video from their upcoming album Before The World Turns To Dust. The album is scheduled for release in fall 2026 through TLG | Virgin Music Group.
Before The World Turns To Dust will be the band’s third album and first full-length studio release since 2004. The 15-track record is expected to be released digitally and on vinyl and CD. An exact release date has not yet been announced.
“Dust” introduces the new album with a theme built around love, connection and the possibility of finding meaning in an unstable world.
Singer, songwriter and guitarist Alex Band said the song began as a love song set against an apocalyptic backdrop before expanding into broader ideas about energy, connection and the universe.
“I was initially writing ‘Dust’ as a timeless love song set in an apocalyptic world—kind of like what ours feels like at the moment—but then the song got a bit deeper,” Band said.
He also connected the song to ideas he had been exploring around quantum physics and astrophysics.
“At the time, I was learning a lot about quantum physics and astrophysics and that brought in a different meaning,” Band said. “We're all basically born from cosmic dust and connected by the same energy that flows through us. If you look close enough, everything in the universe is even made of the same core elements. Maybe love amplifies that subatomic connection? Maybe love can even transcend space and time? All of this was running through my head while writing ‘Dust.’”
The video for “Dust” was directed by Tom Flynn and features Alex Band alongside actress Katelynn E. Newberry.
The source material describes the video as an ethereal, fairy tale-like story involving star-crossed lovers and recurring gold dust imagery. Band said the video expands on the song’s idea that love can survive distance, separation or different states of existence.
“Going off the idea that everything is made of the same energy and love never dies, the video tells a story of two people who haven’t been able to connect—maybe one has passed, maybe both have passed, maybe they live in parallel universes,” Band said. “Whatever way you want to imagine it for yourself, we would like to think that love is stronger than what keeps us apart. That in the right moment, we can find each other again.”
Band also noted that the treatment was written by his wife and that the video was shot at his family’s property in Cleveland during a surprise snowstorm.
Before The World Turns To Dust marks a new full-length chapter for The Calling after a long gap between studio albums.
Band said the group is not trying to follow current trends, but instead returning with the large melodic rock sound associated with the band.
“I hope we fit into today’s musical landscape as we have in the past,” Band said. “We aren’t trying to chase any current trends or change our sound; we’re just hoping that our big anthemic sound resonates and that we can connect with people around the world.”
He also credited the band’s fans for keeping the group alive across the years.
“It’s truly our fans who have kept us alive, never giving up on us like we have never given up on ourselves and our belief that music does so much more than just entertain.”
The current version of The Calling is led by Alex Band, joined by Daniel Damico and Dom Liberati.
Band described the chemistry of the current lineup as a major part of the band’s return.
“We’ve been together in this iteration of the band for four years now, and our chemistry is amazing and keeps getting stronger—whether writing, recording or performing live together,” Band said.
He also described his long friendship and writing connection with Daniel Damico, as well as the addition of Dom Liberati.
“Daniel and I have been friends for over 20 years; he has been playing guitar off and on for me and for The Calling since the early 2000s, and we have very similar taste and writing styles based on our love of classic and 80s/90s rock,” Band said. “I knew I needed to add someone that would bring in something different and shake things up. Then Dom came along.”
The Calling emerged from Los Angeles and became internationally known through “Wherever You Will Go,” the 2001 single that became one of the band’s defining songs.
The source material notes that “Wherever You Will Go” became the second-longest running No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Adult Top 40 chart, holding the position for 23 weeks.
The band’s current return is built around the same core elements that shaped their original identity: large melodic rock arrangements, emotional lyrics and Alex Band’s vocal presence.
