Rhino’s Coltrane 100 arrives October 2 as the first cross-label career-spanning retrospective, with a 6LP audiophile box set, 2LP highlights edition and CD version
Rhino will celebrate John Coltrane’s centennial with Coltrane 100, the first comprehensive cross-label career-spanning retrospective assembled for the legendary saxophonist, composer and cultural figure.
The release arrives shortly after what would have been Coltrane’s 100th birthday on September 23, 2026. Coltrane 100 - Selections From 1951-1967 will be released on October 2, 2026 as a deluxe 6LP audiophile vinyl boxed set through Rhino.com and the artist’s official store.
A curated version, Coltrane 100 - Highlights From 1957-1964, will be available the same day on 2LP and CD.
Coltrane 100 brings together historic recordings licensed from Prestige, Blue Note, Atlantic, Columbia and Impulse!, creating a single audio narrative that follows John Coltrane from his early professional recordings in 1951 through his final boundary-pushing creative sessions in 1967.
The collection traces one of the most important artistic evolutions in modern music: Coltrane as elite sideman, major collaborator, bandleader, innovator, spiritual force and one of the central figures in jazz history.
For collectors, the importance of Coltrane 100 is not only the music, but the way the music has been gathered.
This is a cross-label retrospective, meaning the release reaches across different record companies and eras to place Coltrane’s recordings into one larger career arc. That matters because Coltrane’s catalog is spread across several essential labels, each representing a different stage of his development.
The 6LP audiophile vinyl boxed set gives collectors a physical edition built around presentation, sound and chronology. The set is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany and housed in a slipcase with a 12-page booklet.
Purchases made through Rhino.com and select independent retailers will also include an exclusive, limited-edition 12-inch by 12-inch typography poster featuring the centennial artwork.
Both configurations have been remastered by legendary audio engineer Bernie Grundman.
The release also includes a new essay by Ben Ratliff, the noted Coltrane scholar and music writer, adding historical context to the centennial project.
That combination gives the release a strong collector identity: remastered audio, curated scholarship, physical vinyl presentation and a poster tied to the centennial artwork.
The set begins with Coltrane’s foundational years as a sideman and collaborator, including work connected to Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington.
It then follows his rise as a bandleader through recordings such as “Blue Train,” “Giant Steps,” “My Favorite Things,” “India” and “A Love Supreme, Pt. 1 - Acknowledgement.”
In that sequence, Coltrane 100 presents the movement from hard bop, modal jazz and collaborative work into the deeper spiritual and exploratory language that defined Coltrane’s final years.

The release is part of a wider celebration of John Coltrane’s centennial.
The centennial activity includes immersive listening sessions during Coltrane’s birthday week from September 21 to September 25, 2026, along with live tributes and cultural programming.
The Ravi Coltrane Quartet will perform a special run at Blue Note Los Angeles from September 22 to September 24.
On September 23, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center will present a book panel for Coltrane: A Visual Celebration Of The Legend.
That same day, the Hollywood Bowl will present Coltrane 100: Legacy, a symphony performance featuring Grammy-nominated alto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin.
