Universal Music Japan will release three classic The Who albums as limited Japanese SHM-CD paper sleeve editions on August 28, 2026.

The new collector-focused series includes Live At Leeds, Who’s Next and Quadrophenia, three essential titles from the band’s catalog, each presented with Japanese mini LP-style packaging details.

For collectors, the appeal goes beyond the albums themselves. These editions recreate elements of the original UK LP packaging while adding Japanese obi-style presentation, lyrics, translations and SHM-CD specification.

The three releases are part of the second wave of The Who paper jacket series from Universal Music Japan.

Each title is listed as a limited edition Japanese release, issued by Universal Music LLC in Japan and connected to the Polydor label.

The lineup includes:

Live At Leeds - 1CD

Who’s Next - 1CD

Quadrophenia - 2CD

Japanese SHM-CD editions have long been valued by collectors because of their physical presentation, import status and attention to packaging detail.

In this case, Universal Music Japan is not simply reissuing three albums in standard jewel cases. The series uses mini LP-style paper sleeve presentation, with details inspired by original British LP artwork and Japanese first-pressing obi design.

That makes the set attractive for collectors who focus on The Who, British rock, Japanese imports, paper sleeve CDs, obi editions and physical archive releases.

Live At Leeds will be released as a 1CD limited SHM-CD edition.

Originally released in 1970, Live At Leeds captured The Who live at the University of Leeds in February of that year. Universal Music Japan describes the album as the group’s first live album and one of rock history’s great live recordings.

This edition uses the track configuration from the 25th Anniversary Edition, expanding the original six-track album with eight bonus tracks.

Who’s Next will be released as a 1CD limited SHM-CD edition.

Universal Music Japan notes that Who’s Next became the band’s only album to reach No. 1 in the United Kingdom and also reached No. 4 in the United States.

The album includes several of the band’s most enduring songs, including “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “Behind Blue Eyes.”

Universal Music Japan also notes the album’s later connection to the 1979 film adaptation, known in Japan as Saraba Seishun No Hikari.

The collector value of this series comes from the combination of format, packaging and album selection.

Live At Leeds gives collectors a miniature reproduction-heavy live album edition, with multiple inserts and bonus material. Who’s Next brings one of The Who’s most important studio albums into the SHM-CD paper sleeve line with a 2023 remaster. Quadrophenia adds the larger 2CD rock opera presentation, including a 44-page booklet and the 2014 original mix.

Together, the three releases form a strong collector bundle for fans of classic British rock and Japanese physical media.

The Who remain one of the defining bands in rock history, with a catalog that helped shape live performance, rock opera, album storytelling and the physical culture of classic rock releases.

These three titles represent different sides of the band’s legacy.

Live At Leeds documents their power onstage.

Who’s Next captures their studio evolution after the collapse of Lifehouse.

Quadrophenia shows the band’s ambition as storytellers through one of rock’s major concept albums.

That range is why these Japanese SHM-CD editions work as more than simple reissues. They preserve three very different chapters of The Who in a format aimed directly at physical collectors.

For collectors, The Who’s new Japanese SHM-CD paper sleeve editions offer exactly the kind of physical detail that keeps import releases relevant in the streaming era. Live At Leeds, Who’s Next and Quadrophenia are already essential albums, but Universal Music Japan’s limited mini LP packaging, obi-inspired designs, SHM-CD specification, bonus material and booklet details give these editions a clear archive value for fans who still care about holding music history in their hands.
