The Stray Cats Return To Late-Night Television After 35 Years With Jimmy Fallon Performance

The Stray Cats will return to U.S. late-night television on August 18, 2026 with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, marking the legendary rockabilly trio’s first live late-night television performance in more than 35 years.

The appearance will feature all three original members: Brian Setzer on guitar and vocals, Lee Rocker on upright bass and vocals and Slim Jim Phantom on drums and vocals.

According to SRO PR, the performance will be the group’s first on late-night television since 1990, when The Stray Cats appeared with David Letterman. The band are expected to perform one of their classic hits during the August 18 broadcast.

The television appearance arrives as The Stray Cats complete the summer portion of their 2026 U.S. tour and prepare for another month-long run beginning November 9 in Grand Prairie, Texas.

For a band whose rise coincided with an era when television and music videos could transform a rock act into a national name, returning to late-night television more than three decades later carries additional historical weight.

The Stray Cats became one of the most visible faces of the early-1980s rockabilly revival by combining the language of 1950s rock and roll with the visual energy of the new-wave and MTV era.

Songs including “Rock This Town,” “Stray Cat Strut,” “Runaway Boys” and “(She’s) Sexy + 17” helped establish a catalog that has remained closely associated with the band’s original trio.

Both “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut” became U.S. Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, giving The Stray Cats a commercial breakthrough that carried rockabilly back into the American mainstream during the early 1980s.

The continuing presence of the original lineup is one of the strongest elements of the band’s current era.

Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom formed The Stray Cats in Massapequa, New York, in 1979, building their sound around rockabilly, early rock and roll and the stripped-down dynamics of guitar, upright bass and drums.

After moving to London during the emerging British rockabilly revival, the group broke through with material including “Runaway Boys,” “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut.”

Their success eventually carried back to the United States, where Built For Speed became the record that introduced a wider American audience to material originally developed during the group’s early British period.

More than four decades later, the same three musicians remain the recognizable core of The Stray Cats.

The Stray Cats occupy an unusual place in rock history because they revived an older musical language without presenting themselves simply as a nostalgia act.

The basic ingredients came directly from rockabilly: Setzer’s Gretsch guitar, Rocker’s upright bass, Phantom’s compact drum setup and a visual identity connected to 1950s American rock and roll.

But the group arrived at exactly the right moment for that style to collide with a new media environment.

During the early MTV years, The Stray Cats’ look was immediately recognizable, while songs such as “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut” gave the band material that could move between rock, pop and retro culture.

The result was a band rooted in an earlier generation of American music becoming part of the visual and commercial language of the 1980s.

That history gives the upcoming Tonight Show performance more significance than a routine television booking. It places an original MTV-era rock act back inside one of American television’s longest-running music performance platforms.

2026 TOUR

The August 18 television appearance follows the final shows of The Stray Cats’ summer 2026 run.

The trio perform in Westbury, New York on August 14, followed by Atlantic City, New Jersey on August 15 and Morristown, New Jersey on August 16 before heading to The Tonight Show.

The band then return to the road on November 9 at the Texas Trust CU Theatre in Grand Prairie.

The fall itinerary travels through Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania before concluding on December 6 at the Premier Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

The current setlists are expected to draw heavily from the band’s established catalog, including “Stray Cat Strut,” “Rock This Town,” “Runaway Boys” and “(She’s) Sexy + 17.”

The Stray Cats are not operating entirely as a catalog touring act.

In 2025, the trio released “Stampede” and their version of Eddie Cochran’s “Teenage Heaven” through Surfdog Records, marking their first new recordings in six years.

Both recordings were produced by The Stray Cats and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge.

The sessions took place at The Terrarium in Minneapolis and Laguna Sound in Laguna Beach, California.

“Stampede” was written by Brian Setzer, Peter B. Antonio, Wally Zober, Bert Salmirs and Mike Himelstein, while “Teenage Heaven” was written by Jerry Capehart and Eddie Cochran.

The pairing connects the current band to both sides of its identity: new original material and the early rock-and-roll tradition that helped shape The Stray Cats in the first place.

The two songs also received an old-school physical release that fits naturally with The Stray Cats’ retro identity.

“Stampede” and “Teenage Heaven” were issued as a large-hole 7-inch 45 RPM vinyl single on July 24, 2026.

The first pressing sold out, and Surfdog Records subsequently announced a new blue vinyl variant on August 6.

For a band whose musical language reaches directly back to the original singles era of rock and roll, the format is more than a cosmetic collector edition.

The 45 RPM presentation connects the group’s current recordings to the physical format that originally helped define rockabilly and early rock music.

The Stray Cats’ return to late-night television matters because it connects several eras of American music culture inside one performance.
