Paul McCartney's Wings Book Returns in Paperback With The Beatles Connections and New Morgan Neville Conversation

Paul McCartney will bring Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run back to bookstores in a new paperback edition on October 6, 2026, expanding the internationally bestselling oral history with a new conversation between McCartney and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville.

The North American edition will be published by Liveright in the United States and Canada, while Penguin/Allen Lane will publish a paperback edition simultaneously in the United Kingdom.

For collectors of Paul McCartney, Wings and The Beatles history, the new edition is more than a paperback reprint. The book brings together more than 150 photographs, many previously unseen, alongside handwritten lyrics, diary pages, memorabilia and extensive material drawn from McCartney’s personal archive.

The oral history also incorporates voices connected directly to The Beatles and McCartney’s wider career, including John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and producer George Martin, alongside members of Wings, family members and other figures who witnessed McCartney’s post-Beatles transformation.

Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run was originally published in hardcover in November 2025 as an extensive oral history of McCartney’s creative life during the 1970s and the rise of Wings.

The new paperback gives that project a second physical edition while adding material that was not part of the original release.

For collectors, that distinction matters.

The 2026 edition is not simply the same book transferred into a less expensive format. Its principal new addition is a conversation between Paul McCartney and Morgan Neville, recorded around the release of Neville’s documentary Paul McCartney: Man on the Run.

The discussion reflects on McCartney’s creative reinvention after The Beatles and the way Wings are being reassessed by another generation more than five decades after the group was formed.

That gives the paperback its own place alongside the original hardcover for readers and collectors interested in McCartney’s expanding archive of books, documentaries and physical releases.

Although Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run is fundamentally a book about Wings, its story begins in the immediate aftermath of The Beatles.

McCartney had already reached the highest level of global popular music when The Beatles ended, leaving him to build a new creative identity while carrying the expectations attached to his previous band.

That transition is central to the book.

The oral history includes material involving John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, giving the story direct connections to all four Beatles. Longtime Beatles producer George Martin and Sean Ono Lennon also appear among the voices represented in the project.

Their presence does not turn the book into another Beatles biography.

Instead, the Beatles history provides the starting point for understanding what McCartney was trying to accomplish when he formed an entirely new group and began working his way back toward arenas, major records and worldwide commercial success.

One of the strongest collector elements of the book is the amount of archival material used to reconstruct the Wings years.

The project was assembled from more than 42 hours of new, historical and previously unheard interviews, including material from McCartney’s personal archive.

The visual component is equally substantial.

Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run contains more than 150 photographs, including previously unseen images taken by photographers such as Linda McCartney, Mike McCartney, Clive Arrowsmith, Henry Diltz and Robert Ellis, along with photographs taken by Paul McCartney himself.

The book also reproduces pieces of memorabilia from the period, including McCartney diary entries and handwritten lyrics.

For physical-media collectors, these elements give the book value beyond the written narrative.

They transform it into a visual and documentary archive of a period when McCartney was rebuilding his musical career outside The Beatles.

The story of Wings is also inseparable from Linda McCartney.

Paul formed the group in 1971 alongside Linda on keyboards and vocals, drummer Denny Seiwell and former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine.

Linda’s presence extended beyond her role as a member of the band.

Her photography documented McCartney’s life and the evolution of Wings from the inside, giving the archive an intimacy that traditional music photography could not always provide.

Many of those images form part of the visual history presented in the book, connecting the music, family life and touring years through material created by someone who was simultaneously a musician, photographer and participant in the story.

Wings developed from relatively modest beginnings into one of the major rock bands of the 1970s.

The group’s history included early university shows, lineup changes, international recording sessions and increasingly ambitious touring before Wings reached the arena and stadium level.

The official McCartney archive credits Wings with sales of more than 22 million albums.

Albums including Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and Wings at the Speed of Sound established the group as a commercial force independent of McCartney’s Beatles history.

In the United Kingdom, Band on the Run became Wings’ first No. 1 album, followed by Venus and Mars.

McCartney was not simply extending an existing Beatles career under another name. Wings gradually developed their own catalog, touring identity and commercial history during a decade in which McCartney was effectively beginning again from a very different starting position.

One of the clearest examples of Wings’ commercial scale came with “Mull of Kintyre.”

Released in 1977, the single reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom and spent nine weeks at the top of the Official Singles Chart.

More significantly, “Mull of Kintyre” became the first single to sell more than two million copies in the UK.

The achievement placed a Wings recording inside British chart history while demonstrating just how far McCartney’s second major band had traveled from its informal beginnings earlier in the decade.

That commercial history is part of what makes Wings increasingly interesting from a catalog perspective.

The band was once inevitably compared with The Beatles. More than 50 years later, Wings have accumulated a historical identity of their own, supported by albums, singles, touring history, archival projects and a growing physical-media market around the catalog.

The major addition to the 2026 paperback connects the book directly to Paul McCartney: Man on the Run.

Directed by Morgan Neville, the documentary explores McCartney’s life after the breakup of The Beatles and the formation and rise of Wings. The film began streaming globally on Prime Video in February 2026.

Neville had already played an important role in the book.

The recollections used to construct Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run were collected by the Oscar-winning filmmaker and subsequently shaped into the oral history by historian and editor Ted Widmer.

The new paperback therefore reconnects the two projects.

McCartney and Neville’s additional conversation was recorded around the documentary’s launch and looks back at the same central question approached by both the film and book: how one of the most famous musicians in the world rebuilt his creative life after The Beatles.

Together, the documentary and paperback form part of a wider reassessment of the Wings era.

The book’s oral-history format allows the Wings years to be told through a large group of participants rather than only through McCartney’s recollections.
