Frank Sinatra's Sinatra at the Sands 60th Anniversary Gets 5CD Box Set and Vinylphyle 2LP With Count Basie and Quincy Jones

Frank Sinatra’s Sinatra at the Sands is returning for its 60th anniversary with two major archival editions that revisit his celebrated 1966 Las Vegas engagement with Count Basie & The Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Quincy Jones. Capitol Records/UMe and Frank Sinatra Enterprises will release a new 5CD Sinatra at the Sands 60th Anniversary set and a 2LP 180-gram black-vinyl Vinylphyle edition on October 23, 2026.

The 5CD collection goes substantially beyond the original album. For the first time, listeners will be able to hear five complete performances from Sinatra’s sold-out Copa Room residency at the Sands Hotel, which ran from January 26 through February 1, 1966.

The Vinylphyle edition takes a different approach, preserving the familiar original album sequence while presenting it with new 2026 mixes by longtime Sinatra engineer Larry Walsh and new mastering by Joe Nino-Hernes at Sterling Sound. Both releases will also be available in Dolby Atmos on streaming platforms on October 23.

The original Sinatra at the Sands double album was assembled from performances recorded across several shows during the 1966 residency. The new 5CD anniversary edition changes the perspective.

Instead of reconstructing the familiar album again, the set presents five complete previously unreleased concerts, allowing listeners to hear individual performances as they unfolded in the Copa Room. That preserves elements that naturally changed from show to show: Sinatra’s pacing, song selections, monologues, interaction with the room and the performances of Count Basie’s orchestra.

Disc 3 also contains “Angel Eyes” and “Where Or When” as bonus performances from the second show on January 28.

Across the concerts, Sinatra performs standards including “Come Fly With Me,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Fly Me To The Moon,” “Luck Be A Lady,” “You Make Me Feel So Young,” “It Was A Very Good Year” and “My Kind Of Town.” The famous spoken sections also remain part of the performances, including variations of “The Tea Break” and “A Few Last Words.”

The physical presentation has been designed around the history of the residency. The 5CD collection comes in a digipak featuring an alternate cover inspired by the original Las Vegas residency poster.

It also includes new liner notes by Charles Pignone, eyewitness recollections from people connected to the performances, information on Sinatra’s band personnel and rare photographs of Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Quincy Jones during the period surrounding the Sands shows. For collectors, that makes the box more than an expanded version of the original album. Its central attraction is access to the individual concerts from which the legend of Sinatra at the Sands was built.

The Vinylphyle edition remains a 2LP presentation of the original Sinatra at the Sands album rather than reproducing the entire contents of the five-disc set. It is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl and is available exclusively through uDiscover Music.

For this release, Larry Walsh created new 2026 mixes, while Joe Nino-Hernes handled the mastering at Sterling Sound. The edition retains the original gatefold packaging and the Grammy-winning liner notes by Stan Cornyn, while adding a new insert containing previously unseen photographs taken during the Sands residency and new liner notes from Charles Pignone.

One distinction is worth making for collectors familiar with UMe’s Vinylphyle series: the official Sinatra announcement does not describe this particular edition as AAA. The documented specifications are the new Larry Walsh mixes, Joe Nino-Hernes mastering, 180-gram black vinyl and upgraded archival presentation. Those are the specifications Rockum can confirm for this release.

Sinatra at the Sands occupies a particularly important position in Sinatra’s catalog because it was his first live album. The performances brought together three major musical forces: Sinatra at the microphone, Count Basie & The Orchestra behind him and a young Quincy Jones arranging and conducting the music. The Copa Room residency ran from January 26 through February 1, 1966, capturing Sinatra during an era when Las Vegas had become inseparable from his public identity. Sinatra himself later remembered working with Basie and Jones as one of the most exciting live engagements of his career. The resulting album reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200 and earned Gold certification from the RIAA. Sixty years later, the anniversary project returns not only to the album but to the performances that surrounded it.

Ahead of the October release, “Luck Be A Lady” has been issued as the first preview from the anniversary campaign, accompanied by an official visualizer. The song appears during several of the newly released complete performances, allowing the 5CD collection to document how Sinatra and the orchestra approached the same material on different nights. For longtime listeners, that ability to compare complete shows may ultimately be the most historically valuable part of the anniversary set.

The familiar Sinatra at the Sands album remains intact on Vinylphyle, while the 5CD edition opens the doors to the larger residency from which it emerged.

A 60th-anniversary edition of Sinatra at the Sands could easily have been another remaster of an album that has already spent decades in the catalog. Instead, the two 2026 editions serve different purposes.

The Vinylphyle 2LP gives collectors a new physical presentation of the classic album, with new mixes, Sterling Sound mastering, original gatefold elements and previously unseen photographs. The 5CD set goes deeper by preserving five complete nights from Sinatra’s 1966 Sands residency for the first time. That distinction gives the anniversary real archival value.

The original album documented Frank Sinatra with Count Basie and Quincy Jones at one of the defining locations of his career. Sixty years later, the new collection allows listeners to move beyond the finished album and hear more of what actually happened in the Copa Room during that week in Las Vegas.
