Parton leaves behind a career spanning nearly six decades, more than 100 million records sold worldwide, an estimated 3,000 songs written, 25 Billboard country No. 1s and induction into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on January 19, 1946, in Tennessee, she grew up as one of 12 children and began writing songs while still a child. She was performing on local radio by age 11 and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry at 13 before moving to Nashville after high school. Her early national breakthrough came through her partnership with Porter Wagoner. When Parton eventually decided to leave that professional partnership, she wrote “I Will Always Love You” as a farewell to Wagoner. The song later became an international phenomenon again when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard.
Parton repeatedly described songwriting as the center of her career.
Her catalog included “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You,” songs that crossed country, pop and multiple generations of performers.
“Jolene” alone was later interpreted by artists ranging from The White Stripes to Beyoncé.
She also became a major film presence, making her movie debut in 9 to 5 in 1980 alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The title song earned her an Academy Award nomination.
Parton won 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
Her career also extended far beyond recordings.
She became closely associated with Dollywood in Tennessee and created the Imagination Library, which distributes books to children in several countries, including Canada.
In 2020, Parton donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for COVID-19 research that contributed to development work connected with Moderna’s vaccine.
Despite the awards, sales, films and businesses, Parton consistently returned to songwriting when discussing how she wanted to be remembered.
She once summarized it simply:
“The songs are my legacy.”
