The singer behind “That’s All I Want From You” and “The Longest Walk” later built a second career on American television, from her own 1956 NBC show to The Gong Show
Jaye P. Morgan, the singer who became one of America’s prominent female recording artists of the 1950s before building a second career as a television personality, has died at the age of 94.
Morgan died of natural causes on August 24, 2026, in Longview, Washington, according to her longtime attorney and friend Mark Sendroff. Her career crossed several eras of American entertainment: family vaudeville, big-band singing, hit records, television variety shows, talk shows and eventually the deliberately chaotic world of The Gong Show.
Born Mary Margaret Morgan on December 3, 1931, in Mancos, Colorado, she began performing at age three as part of the Morgan Family, a traveling vaudeville act that included her parents and siblings.
Her famous stage name came later. While serving as treasurer of her California high-school class, classmates nicknamed her “J.P.” after financier J.P. Morgan. She eventually changed the spelling to Jaye P. By 17 she was singing professionally, and in 1950 she joined Frank De Vol’s orchestra. Early recordings led to a contract with RCA Records and a run of hits that made Morgan one of the more successful female pop singers of the decade.
Her biggest recordings included the Top 10 hits “That’s All I Want From You” and “The Longest Walk,” along with Top 20 singles “Danger! Heartbreak Ahead,” “If You Don’t Want My Love” and “Pepper-Hot Baby.” She also recorded charting duets with Perry Como and worked with country singer Eddy Arnold.
In 1954, DownBeat’s annual disc-jockey poll named Morgan the year’s best new female singer. Morgan’s recording success quickly opened another career.
After appearing on programs including Stop the Music and Robert Q. Lewis’ daytime variety show, she received her own NBC television series, The Jaye P. Morgan Show, in 1956. Four of her brothers also appeared on the program.
Television eventually became as important to her public identity as music. Morgan became a recurring guest on The Tonight Show and appeared with hosts including Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett and Mike Douglas. She also made appearances on programs such as The Odd Couple, The Muppet Show, The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.
But a younger generation would know her best from The Gong Show.
Beginning in 1976, Morgan became one of the regular celebrity judges on Chuck Barris’ unconventional talent competition The Gong Show, appearing alongside personalities including Jamie Farr and Rip Taylor. The format allowed judges to end particularly unsuccessful acts by striking a large gong, and Morgan’s uninhibited personality became part of the program’s identity. Her years on The Gong Show effectively gave Morgan a second period of national recognition long after her original run of 1950s hit singles.
She continued acting and making television appearances afterward, with screen credits eventually including The Gong Show Movie, Night Patrol, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and George Clooney’s Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
Jaye P. Morgan’s career is unusual because neither half completely defines it. For audiences in the 1950s, she was a recording star whose singles regularly appeared on the American charts. For viewers who encountered her decades later, she was the outspoken television personality from The Gong Show and a familiar presence on talk and variety programs.
Together, those careers document a performer who moved from the final years of vaudeville and big-band entertainment into early television, 1950s pop and eventually the irreverent television culture of the 1970s.
Morgan is survived by her son, Paul Kane.
