For millions of listeners, Linda Perry will always be immediately connected to the unmistakable voice behind 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” But the song that made her one of the most recognizable figures of early-1990s alternative rock became only the beginning of a career that would eventually place her behind recordings by some of the biggest artists in popular music.

That larger story is at the center of Linda Perry: Let It Die Here, the feature documentary directed by Don Hardy, which will premiere on Hulu on September 18, 2026 following its festival and theatrical run. The 93-minute film originally had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in 2024, where it was presented as an intimate examination of Perry’s career, family life, creative process and questions about identity and purpose.

Rather than building a conventional career retrospective around awards, famous collaborators and catalog highlights, the documentary follows Perry during a period when her personal and professional lives were changing at the same time. Hardy was given extensive access to new recording sessions, performances and conversations with Perry, alongside interviews with people who have been part of her life and work.

Dolly Parton, Christina Aguilera, Brandi Carlile, Sara Gilbert and Kate Hudson are among those appearing in the film.

Perry became internationally known as the singer and principal songwriter of 4 Non Blondes, whose “What’s Up?” became the defining song from the band’s only studio album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!

But her most significant second act happened largely away from the role of frontwoman.

Over the following decades, Perry established herself as a songwriter and producer whose credits crossed rock and mainstream pop, working with artists including Christina Aguilera, P!nk, Dolly Parton, Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Miley Cyrus, Adele, Ariana Grande, The Chicks and Weezer. Her own official biography and the documentary materials make that reinvention a central part of the story: the artist once recognized instantly by her hat, voice and one enormous hit gradually became a creative presence behind other artists’ records.

Songs such as Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” and P!nk’s “Get the Party Started” helped make Perry’s songwriting work familiar to another generation of listeners who may not initially have known the person behind them.

The film also became connected to another major chapter in Perry’s own recording career.

After seeing herself reflected through the documentary, Perry began creating new music that developed into the album Let It Die Here. Released on May 8, 2026 through Kill Rock Stars/670 Records, the 17-track record marked her first solo studio album in more than 25 years. Perry produced and engineered the album, which includes songs such as “Balboa Park,” “Push Me in the River,” “What Lies With You,” “Beautiful,” “Feathers in a Storm” and the title track.

That connection between the record and documentary makes the Hulu premiere more than the arrival of an older festival film on streaming. Both projects document essentially the same period from different directions: one through film and the other through the songs Perry wrote while confronting the experiences captured by Hardy’s cameras.

Perry herself has said she did not originally intend to make a documentary and believes that lack of planning contributed to how exposed the finished film became. Mercury Studios quoted her describing the experience of first watching it as both a source of pride and something frightening because of how much of herself had been revealed.

After its 2024 Tribeca premiere, Linda Perry: Let It Die Here continued through additional festival screenings before receiving a theatrical rollout in 2026. Its theatrical run expanded through more than 20 U.S. cities and London before the September Hulu launch.

The film has also entered the current awards conversation. Its distributors say it has qualified for consideration for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, while Perry’s song “What Lies With You”, which appears in the film, is being positioned in the Best Original Song race. The Hollywood Reporter recently included the song among potential contenders in that category.

The timing also finds Perry in an unusually active period. Alongside the documentary and solo album, 4 Non Blondes returned to activity after decades apart, bringing renewed attention to “What’s Up?” and to a career that has repeatedly moved between performer, songwriter and producer.

It would be easy to reduce Linda Perry’s story to one of two narratives: the distinctive singer who made “What’s Up?” unavoidable in the 1990s, or the songwriter and producer who later helped other performers create major records.

Let It Die Here connects those two careers while also examining the person who lived between them.

That may ultimately be what makes the documentary useful as an archive of Perry’s work. It does not arrive at the end of her career looking backward. Instead, it captures an artist still recording, producing, questioning her own choices and creating new music more than three decades after 4 Non Blondes first made her famous.
