Cheetah Chrome, founding guitarist of the Dead Boys and one of the musicians who helped define the raw sound of early American punk, died on September 13, 2026. He was 71. His death was announced by the Dead Boys, who remembered their longtime bandmate as an original figure in the punk movement. No cause of death has been publicly announced.

Born Eugene Richard O’Connor in Cleveland, Ohio, Chrome emerged from a local scene that would become increasingly important to the development of American punk. In 1974 he joined Rocket From the Tombs, the short-lived but influential proto-punk group whose members would later help form both Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys.

After Rocket From the Tombs broke apart, Chrome and drummer Johnny Blitz joined singer Stiv Bators in Frankenstein, a group that quickly evolved into the Dead Boys. With guitarist Jimmy Zero and bassist Jeff Magnum completing the lineup, the band moved from Cleveland into the emerging New York punk scene and became closely associated with CBGB.

The Dead Boys released their debut album, Young, Loud and Snotty, in 1977. Its opening track, “Sonic Reducer,” became the song most closely associated with the group and one of the enduring recordings of the first American punk wave. A second album, We Have Come for Your Children, followed in 1978 before the original band dissolved.

Chrome’s guitar was central to that sound: aggressive, direct and deliberately stripped of the polish that dominated much of mainstream rock in the late 1970s. The Dead Boys’ influence ultimately reached far beyond the relatively short initial life of the band, while “Sonic Reducer” continued to circulate through later generations of punk and alternative rock musicians.

Chrome himself remained active long after that original era. He participated in later Dead Boys reunions and revived Rocket From the Tombs in the 2000s, recording and touring again with the group. In 2010, he published his autobiography, Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy’s Tale from the Front Lines of Punk Rock, documenting the Cleveland and New York scenes from the perspective of someone who had been inside them.

Chrome was also still working on new music at the time of his death.

According to Cleopatra Records material reported following his passing, Chrome had opened his archives for a new project built around previously unreleased Dead Boys recordings. The album was being developed with several guest singers, including Michael Monroe of Hanoi Rocks, as well as Chrome himself.

The Dead Boys had also been discussing plans connected to the 50th anniversary of Young, Loud and Snotty in 2027. What happens to those plans following Chrome’s death has not yet been established publicly.

His death closes another direct connection to the small group of musicians who moved between Cleveland’s experimental underground and the formative New York punk scene of the 1970s.

Chrome’s recorded legacy is relatively compact compared with many artists who followed him, but Young, Loud and Snotty, “Sonic Reducer” and his work with Rocket From the Tombs remain part of the foundation from which American punk developed.
