New Order's Gillian Gilbert Reveals She Is Living With Cancer and Continuing Treatment

New Order keyboardist and guitarist Gillian Gilbert has revealed that she is living with cancer and is continuing treatment, clarifying recent reports that had suggested her husband and bandmate Stephen Morris was seriously ill.

Gilbert issued the statement through New Order’s official channels on September 15, 2026, following concern generated by a recent interview with Morris. She explained that his comments had been misinterpreted and confirmed that Morris is well.

“It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer,” Gilbert said, while thanking fans for their support and asking for privacy as she continues treatment.

The musician did not disclose further details about her diagnosis or treatment.

Gilbert and Morris had already stepped away from touring with New Order for the foreseeable future, with the band previously citing personal health reasons. New Order’s current South American schedule begins November 23 in São Paulo and continues through dates in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Colombia in November and December.

The health update also arrives ahead of the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where Joy Division and New Order will be inducted together in the Performer category on November 14 in Los Angeles. Gilbert, Morris, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and the late Ian Curtis are the musicians named by the Hall as inductees.

Gilbert joined New Order shortly after the end of Joy Division and became an integral part of the band’s combination of post-punk, synthesizers and electronic music, contributing to recordings that helped define New Order’s sound through the 1980s and beyond.

For now, Gilbert has asked that attention remain on the information she chose to share: Stephen Morris is well, while she continues cancer treatment and has requested privacy.
