Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers reunited with Chris Stapleton at the 2026 Americana Honors & Awards on September 16, opening the ceremony at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium with a performance that marked the band’s first formal full reunion since Tom Petty’s death in 2017.
Original Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair took the stage behind Stapleton for “Breakdown” and “American Girl.” Lynch, the band’s original drummer, then exited before Stapleton returned for “You Wreck Me” with Campbell, Tench and Blair joined by later Heartbreakers members Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston.
The surviving members were also presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 25th annual Americana Honors & Awards. The ceremony took place at the Ryman as part of AMERICANAFEST 2026.
The reunion carries particular significance because the Heartbreakers had participated in partial gatherings and individual collaborations since Petty died, but had not formally returned together as the Heartbreakers. The September 16 performance brought the surviving original lineup back together onstage nearly nine years after Petty’s death.
The appearance also comes during the 50th anniversary of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, formed in 1976. The Tom Petty Estate is marking the anniversary with Origins 1971–1978, an archival collection arriving November 6 through UMe that traces the period from Petty’s pre-Heartbreakers work through the band’s earliest recordings.
The surviving Heartbreakers are also scheduled to discuss the band’s history during the “Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: 50 Years” panel at the AMERICANAFEST Business Conference on September 17.
For one night, however, the anniversary moved beyond archival releases and retrospectives. Campbell, Tench, Lynch and Blair were playing together again, with Stapleton taking on three songs from the catalog they helped build with Tom Petty.
