UPDATE — September 20, 2026: Duncan Sheik died on September 17 at the age of 56. His family confirmed his death on September 18, following the earlier announcement that he was receiving medical treatment in critical but stable condition.
Duncan Sheik, the singer-songwriter behind the 1996 hit “Barely Breathing” and the Tony-winning music for Spring Awakening, is receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition.
The update was shared through Sheik’s official Instagram account on September 16, 2026. His family said it would not release additional medical information and asked for privacy while indicating that further updates would be provided when appropriate.
No diagnosis or specific reason for his current medical treatment has been publicly disclosed.
Sheik, 56, emerged internationally with “Barely Breathing,” the lead single from his 1996 self-titled debut album. The song earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and became the recording most closely associated with the first chapter of his career.
He later established a second major career in musical theater. Sheik composed the music for Spring Awakening, working with lyricist and book writer Steven Sater. The original Broadway production won the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, while its cast recording received the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The health update comes shortly before two projects connected to Sheik are scheduled in New York. His new musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen is scheduled to begin previews Sept. 25, while a new Off-Broadway production of Spring Awakening is set to begin previews Nov. 27. No announcement has been made that his medical condition has changed those schedules.
For now, Sheik’s family has provided no additional medical details beyond confirming that he remains under care in critical but stable condition.
