The founding guitarist of the San Francisco punk band confirms he intends to keep performing as long as his health allows, with Dead Kennedys scheduled to play four West Coast concerts in October 2026
East Bay Ray, founding guitarist of Dead Kennedys, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the San Francisco punk band's management announced on September 22, 2026. The 67-year-old musician, whose real name is Raymond Pepperell, intends to continue performing and touring with the group for as long as his health allows.
In a statement shared through the band's official Instagram account, management confirmed the diagnosis and said Ray appreciated the continued support from fans. No additional details about his medical condition or treatment were disclosed.
Dead Kennedys' upcoming West Coast concerts remain scheduled, beginning October 6 at The Showbox in Seattle, followed by October 7 at Portland's Roseland Theater, October 9 at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco and October 11 at Riverside Municipal Auditorium in California. The band has not announced any changes to those performances.
Ray co-founded Dead Kennedys in San Francisco in 1978 and has remained the band's only constant member since its formation. His guitar work helped shape the group's sound on recordings including “Holiday in Cambodia,” “California Über Alles” and their 1980 debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.
