The win, alongside Best Direction and the inaugural Artist Director Honors, lifts Swift to 33 career VMAs - the most in the awards’ history
Taylor Swift won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, taking the ceremony’s top competitive prize and using her acceptance speech to honor the late Dolly Parton.
Swift dedicated the award to Parton, whom she described as the “ultimate showgirl,” praising the country legend’s storytelling and the way she approached her career with gratitude toward her audience. “The Fate of Ophelia,” written and directed by Swift, appears on her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl.
The Video of the Year victory was one of three awards Swift received during the ceremony. She also won Best Direction for “Opalite” and accepted the first-ever MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a special award recognizing recording artists whose work behind the camera has advanced music-video storytelling.
Those three honors brought Swift’s career total to 33 MTV Video Music Awards, making her the most-awarded artist in VMA history. She entered the ceremony tied with Beyoncé at 30 career wins.
