How the thrash metal bassist turned a lifelong caffeine ritual into a sensory craft, a business venture, and a global community for fans of music and coffee.
For decades, David Ellefson has been recognized as one of the most influential bassists in thrash metal, anchoring Megadeth with precision, tone, and stage presence but away from the roaring amplifiers and tour buses lies another passion one brewed daily: coffee.
Over the years, Ellefson has refined his relationship with the beverage, not just as a morning boost, but as a ritual of health, flavor, and culture. Speaking about his evolution, he explains that part of the change comes with age and self-awareness:
“At 54, I’m always tracking my health exercise, diet, everything. I stopped adding cream to my coffee, and I try to avoid artificial sweeteners and processed additives. Now it’s black coffee, with two ice cubes.”
Surprisingly, those ice cubes aren’t about cooling. They’re about flavor.
Ellefson discovered a tasting technique used in the coffee world called cupping—the equivalent of wine tasting, where multiple cups are lined up to analyze different profiles.
“It’s interesting how even one or two ice cubes can change the flavor. Adding sugar, honey, milk, or cream transforms its profile completely. Some coffees have enough natural flavor that you don’t need anything at all.”
The more Ellefson studied, the more he leaned toward letting the natural character of the beans shine.
Ellefson Coffee Co.
In early 2017, Ellefson opened the first Ellefson Coffee Co. shop in his hometown of Jackson, Minnesota. There, he partnered with a local café owner to create Urban Legend, an exclusive blend inspired by the Megadeth track “Mary Jane,” itself rooted in a 19th century Jackson urban legend.
Although the brick and mortar shop has since closed, the brand expanded into a full line of products, including fan favorites such as:
Roast in Peace
Kenya Thrash
Limited collaborative blends
Business partner Thom Hazaert once described a visit to the legendary Mary Jane gravesite at Loon Lake with a paranormal investigator fuel for the gothic aura behind the blend.
The Philosophy Behind the Brew
On the official Ellefson Coffee Co. website, David summarizes his mission:
“My love for coffee has traveled with me around the world throughout my musical career. Like the spirit of a culture or the melody of a song, coffee brings people together.”
He highlights traceable beans, cultural roots, and the connection between taste, community, and creativity:
“My goal is to bring flavor to our tables, ignite our rock and roll spirits, and continue the global community of music, art, and coffee. May you Roast in Peace!”
From Farm Roots to Global Flavor
Ellefson grew up on a farm in Jackson, Minnesota where the agriculture of growth and harvest was part of daily life. Since 1994, he has lived in Scottsdale, Arizona, but the values of craftsmanship, origin, and community remain present in his approach to coffee.
Why It Resonates
This story works because coffee is:
ritual
art
chemistry
identity
culture
and in rock, rituals matter.
It’s a bridge between fans and artist—the same way vinyl, guitars, and live shows are.
It is no surprise that Ellefson’s cups are still being raised by:
musicians
roasters
collectors
fans
around the world.
Coffee and metal may seem like different worlds but as David Ellefson proves, sometimes the perfect brew comes from depth, character, and a rhythm that never stops.
Roast in peace.
