From Lima to Kingston: Music, immigration, and the evolution of rock culture in Canada
Rockum founder, radio host, and music journalist Gino Alache appeared on The Morning Show on Global News Canada, one of the country’s most recognized and influential television networks. The segment was hosted by Bill Welychka, a celebrated Canadian media icon known for interviewing rock legends such as The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, KISS, Metallica, David Bowie, and many more.
During the broadcast, Gino was introduced as “a new Kingstonian” and “a celebrated journalist in his native Peru”, acknowledging both his cultural journey and long-standing contribution to rock journalism. The conversation touched on adapting to life in Kingston, Ontario, the role music plays in building community, and stories collected across decades of interviews, concerts, and radio work.
Gino attended the interview with Janice Lumb, friend, educator, and English teacher, whose support reflects the sense of mentorship and community Kingston is known for.
For Rockum, this television feature reinforces its mission: to keep rock culture alive through authenticity, ethics, and passion. It also highlights how independent media voices continue to enrich Canada’s cultural landscape beyond mainstream trends.
