From Children of Bodom to ambitious orchestral works, the Finnish guitarist left a legacy of innovation, passion, and unforgettable stage presence
One of the most renowned guitarists of his generation, Alexi Laiho is remembered for his extraordinary technical skill, fiery stage presence, and signature blend of neoclassical shred and melodic aggression. Best known as the frontman of Children of Bodom, Laiho became a defining figure in modern metal and a cornerstone of Finland’s international music reputation.
Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen formed Children of Bodom in 1993, developing a unique sound that fused melodic death metal with power metal precision and virtuosic guitar leads. Over more than two decades, the band released a celebrated catalogue, toured relentlessly, and remained one of Finland’s most acclaimed musical exports. Their final farewell concert in 2019 marked the end of a landmark chapter in metal history.
In his final years, Laiho assembled Bodom After Midnight, recording three songs and producing a music video that would later be released posthumously. The project reflected his enduring creative energy and refusal to slow down, even while dealing with long-term health challenges.
Beyond Children of Bodom, Laiho contributed to projects such as Warmen, Sinergy, Kylähullut, and The Local Band. He also earned multiple international awards, including recognition from Metal Hammer’s Golden Gods. In 2015, he led “100 Guitars From Hel” at the Helsinki Festival conducting and performing alongside one hundred guitarists in a massive, cathedral-like display of harmony and distortion. The piece has since become an enduring symbol of his artistic ambition.
Bandmates from Bodom After Midnight expressed their grief:
“We are crushed by the sudden passing of our dear friend and band member. Words cannot describe this shock and the profound sadness that we feel.”
Outside of music, Laiho valued family deeply. He embraced his roles as stepfather, uncle, and godfather, drawing comfort from close family ties during years of touring and creative pressure. His sister shared:
“We are all absolutely shocked and devastated. We ask for privacy and understanding during these hard times.”
Laiho’s family in Australia echoed the sentiment:
“Alexi was the most loving and magnificent husband and father. Our hearts are eternally broken.”
The global metal community continues to feel the void left by his absence. Tributes from fans, fellow musicians, and publications emphasize not only his technical brilliance, but also the inspiration he provided to countless guitarists worldwide.
Alexi Laiho’s legacy lives on through records, performances, and the generations of musicians who picked up a guitar because of him. His music remains a reminder of how passion, discipline, and individuality can reshape an entire genre.
Rest in power, Alexi.
Your riffs will echo forever.
