The debut album that redefined Ritchie Blackmore’s career returns in a remixed edition with unreleased material, updated artwork and exclusive bonus content
Blackmore’s Night, the project founded by Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night, revisited their landmark debut Shadow of the Moon with a 25th anniversary edition, expanding the album’s legacy through new mixes, unreleased recordings and additional visual content.
Originally released in 1997, Shadow of the Moon marked a decisive turning point in Blackmore’s career, as he stepped away from his work with Deep Purple and Rainbow to explore a more acoustic and historically inspired sound rooted in medieval and Renaissance music, combined with contemporary songwriting.
For this anniversary edition, the album was remixed from the original recordings and converted into high-definition audio, allowing the performances to be presented with greater clarity while preserving their original character. The iconic artwork was also refreshed and reworked to reflect the significance of the release.
The reissue also introduces new material, including previously unreleased acoustic recordings of “Shadow of the Moon” and “Spirit of the Sea”, captured during an intimate home session by Blackmore and Night, offering a more personal perspective on the music.
In addition, the physical editions include a documentary detailing the story behind Shadow of the Moon, alongside music videos for “Shadow of the Moon”, “No Second Chance” and “Renaissance Faire”, with optional audio commentary from the band.
The album itself remains a defining statement of Blackmore’s artistic direction, blending acoustic instrumentation, folk influences and melodic composition into a sound that continues to resonate with listeners. Tracks such as “The Clock Ticks On”, “Minstrel Hall”, “Ocean Gypsy” and “Writing on the Wall” reflect the project’s signature atmosphere and musical identity.
